i know a lot of ppl want guns banned after episodes like virginia tech and columbine. but this proves where there is a will there is a way

TOKYO — A man who police said "was tired of life" drove into a crowd of pedestrians Sunday and then went on a stabbing rampage in Tokyo's top electronics and video game district, killing seven people and wounding 10, authorities said.

The deadly lunchtime assault paralyzed the Akihabara neighborhood, which is wildly popular among the country's youth. The killings were the latest in a series of grisly knife attacks that have stoked fears of rising crime in Japan.

A 25-year-old man, Tomohiro Kato, was apprehended in the attack, authorities said.

"The suspect told police that he came to Akihabara to kill people," said Jiro Akaogi, a spokesman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. "He said he was tired of life. He said he was sick of everything."

News reports said the man crashed a rented, two-ton truck into pedestrians, then jumped out of the truck and began stabbing the people he'd knocked down before turning on horrified onlookers.

The attacker grunted and roared as he slashed and stabbed at his victims on a street crowded with Sunday shoppers, reports said.

"He was screaming as he was stabbing people at random," a witness told NHK.

A witness told NHK the suspect dropped the knife after police threatened to shoot him. An amateur video filmed by a mobile phone showed policemen overpowering the bespectacled suspect.

Police confirmed seven deaths — six men and one woman — but they could not say whether the victims died from injuries from the truck or were stabbed to death.

At least 17 ambulances rushed to the scene, with TV footage showing rescue workers tending to victims in the street.

Another amateur video taken five minutes after the rampage showed shoppers helping the victims and a man screaming, "Ambulance, Ambulance!" according to NHK.

Akihabara district, known as Electric Town, is wildly popular with Japan's cyber-wise youth.

Once rare, stabbing attacks have become more frequent in Japan in recent years as violent crime has increased.

In March, one person was stabbed to death and at least seven others were hurt by a man who went on a slashing spree with two knives outside a shopping mall in eastern Japan.

In one of the worst attacks, a man with a history of mental illness burst into an elementary school in Japan in 2001 and killed eight children. The killer was executed in 2004.

i support a japan-wide ban on trucks and knives after this, we've got to keep the people safe, this shit is too scary. even if you use a knife or truck properly, we cant take the chance that one day you'll just snap, we've got to pass laws to protect regular unarmed pedestrians. this shit is just too frequent in japan and we have to keep the public safe

And then you gotta ask how many people he would've killed if he would've had a gun...

Maybe he has bad aim and needs the hand to hand contact to kill anyone? Bet that didn't go into your thinking.

And then you gotta ask how many people he would've killed if he would've had a gun...

exactly, with a little practice he could've dropped 20 or 30 easily. thank god japan already banned guns or the carnage would have tripled.

my point is that they need to ban trucks and knives too, because how many would he have taken out without those? not even one i'm sure

and he was in the section of towns where ppl played video games, which obviously desensitized him to violence so he could actually carry out his sick wishes

wow if i'd do a thread about every stabbing in japan i'd probably have your postcount tom

funny thing about doing it on sundays is you get to hit much more people since they close the main roads on sundays and sometimes saturday evenings ... at least a little smart thing there

+1

What does this have to do with banning guns? If he had gotten hold of a automatic rifle he could've killed 30+

Dunno about Japanese laws but in Sweden knives above 3 inches are illigal and you need a licence to operate a truck.

Oh god, weapons are a problem controllable but there will always be some case... The only way is to ban every thing that could arm someone but this is really impossible.

The problems of guns that they are ranged, and if someone knows what he's doing can go in a very big killing spree... I live in Switzerland with one of the higher guns ownership per capita of the World but there isn't a general bad opinion on guns, they don't pose a problem for Swiss population. The killing with legal guns is very low, inferior to the knife stabbing and unlegal guns, but it like this everywhere (I think).

Also there is this the obligation to take home the service weapon that is blocked to semi-automatic but for what I've thing its possible to unblock it (but if you do so if they catch you, you go in prison for much time). But still you don't hear of mass murdering with the service weapon.

Like this is the Swiss reality and don't think the American isn't so far from ours just that in a 300 million population the probably to find a mentally unstable idiot that goes in a spree killing is higher.

in before tom or tsugumi say I'm a retard..

Like deg said, some knives are banned or at least legally controlled to some extent. And they should be, things like switchblades, butterfly knives and in general small knives designed mainly for combat. Of course things like cooking knives or "tool" knives should be legal although controlled to some extent e.g. making it illegal to carry them in public without a good reason.
Same applies for guns, some guns should be tightly controlled and even banned, some guns should be legal and fairly easy to get. For example guns used for hunting, such as certain shotguns, rifles and large revolvers should be legal and it should be fairly easy to get them. Of course you shouldn't be allowed the walk around the streets of a city carrying a .44 Magnum revolver.

But guns more suitable for crime and less suitable for legal activites, for example easily concealable handguns, semiautomatic carbines and other semiautomatics that are smaller than rifles should be either banned from civilian use or at least very tightly controlled.

Granted, this is from my Finnish perspective where the idea of having to own a gun for self-defence purposes is a very, very distant idea.

Now I don't think that banning/controlling handguns stops crime completely but I do think that it makes the world a safer the place. And yeah if a nutcase wants to go on a rampage, he'll use a car, a knife or a gun and the legistlation won't really stop them. But legistlation does help against "regular" gun violence, armed robberies etc.

well lets see now, 50-60 years ago this shit was unheard of, so sum1 is to blame.

hollywood glorifying violence, their young african american negro rap stars glorifying gun culture, warmongering presidents abusing a nation to fuel its own pocket and prevent a massive national breakdown and mass hysteric riots if oil was to completely disappear. the wiggas trying to be black and join the hype, only fuelling the whole gang war shit etc. seems pretty clear to me where it started, at least my opinion anyway

Not really. In Russia guns are banned entirely but they have a high homicide rate as well.

Russia is dominated by Organized Crime, it doesn't count.

Tsgumi

You missed the point. Both the US and Russia are high population industrialized nations that are composed of multiple ethnic backgrounds. A high rate of homicide isn't the result of rap or tv showing violence as Einherjer suggests, but it is the result of a multitude of factors. Blaming media is silly because you could then preach that the exact opposite, such as gospel music, results in lower crime rates.
