Played the Open Beta for a while today. Just thought I'd share my thoughts.

Graphics - For a comparison, I made a character that looks like the Lineage 2 light elves. I think the character models are quite a step below Lineage 2 models. Everything else looks like an odd misture of Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft. The ground texterues are horrible. The armor sets do not look like clothing, but like a painted-on extention of the character. The monsters look pretty good actually. But I would have to say the strongest items graphically are the weapons. Even low-level weapons look really good.

Controls - Nearly a mirror image of Lineage 2. Point and click to run and right click to rotate. However, the camera does not rotate UP at all, so if you are running up a ramp or hill, you simply can not see what is up there. To fight, you double-click on a mob just like L2 (or you can single click and hit the spacebar). Use skills by hitting F1-F12 or righ clicking them on the skill bar. Picking up items is the single most challenging part of the game to me. As far as I can tell, you have to click on the item to pick it up . . and some are pretty darn small (plus mobs drop multiple items, so you have to pick and choose which ones you want if your inventory is full).

Interface and Other Stuff - The music is not orchestrated, but more of a Final Fantasy-ish MIDI file. I like the skill bar and the way skills are acquired (kind of complicated to get into here). You can only create one character on the server . . which makes sense as there are warring "factions". The test for the quests and such are all messed up and run together (but they did in Lineage 2 beta as well). Not much of a choice for armor or weapons . . . at least early on.

I have not gotten into PvP yet, as I am still trying to level.

Overall, comparing this open beta to Lineage 2 open beta . . . I think Lineage 2 was twenty times better. However, since this IS a beta, it will be interesting to see if more features/armor/weapons and fixes are added.

I've been playing a bit as well.

And I completely agree with what you said. L2 beta was chaotic and fun. So far I feel like I'm just playing a 1 player grind fest. The game also has a unresponsive, clunky feel.

It's certainly enjoyable, but really in the typical MMO way -- you see a simple goal, such as your next level, finishing a quest, new equipment, new skills, etc and you are forced by an addictive drive to obtain that goal. It shouldn't be long until that gets tiresome.

I also sense that there are several design flaws in terms of game mechanics, but I don't really have the big picture at this point so it's hard to say.

Definitely won't replace L2.

The game also has a unresponsive, clunky feel.

might have something to do with the fact you are trying to play on a server ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD.

I was laughing my ass off last night in RF Online.

Created a new character and went out to do the newbie quest, which consists of killing a lowbie monster over and over. Nothing quite as fun as 10 monsters with 290 people trying to be the first to kill them.

Need to kill 5 of them for the quest. . .took me a half hour. lol

sounds like really intelligent game design

Not really fair to compare any beta to L2 xP L2 beta was prob the most fun i'll ever have in a video game

and you can rotate your camera vertically just push O for options then at the bottom it shows 'Camera 1 2 3 4 5', you're probably on the first one. switch to 2 and you'll be able to rotate camera any way u like

It's a bit too laggy for me to do anything so I'm not gonna play this one much yet

Cam view, u have 5 diff cam views to change between, option 2 makes it like l2, spins horizontal and vertical..

loots, hold spacebar dummy ><

pvp, err duno how to discribe it, but its like l2 pvp but sort of better cause u have to REALLY team up to kill the others, takes alot of tactics

anyway u cant play it anymore since they blocked all IP's exept the phillipines :def_cry: :def_cry:

yup. i was basically saying the controls and interface felt clunky and unresponsive. this can definitely be said about some 1 player games or some console games, and i think it's an issue with RF. some developers really know how to make a fluid connection between you and the game. other games can be likened to the controls of this:

Repost from a post I made in another forum... I guess you can tell that I am not impressed...

Tried RF Online (Philippine open beta before they closed of foreign ip)...

It had one good thing: Individual leveling of skills... ie the more you use them, the better they get. You can level exp on your own level on low level mobs - but to level skills - you have to fight hard mobs. If you powerlevel - you end up an underskilled gimp.

But...
It has a GUI from hell. L2 GUI is like utter perfection compared to RF Online. Use skill 1, cannot use skill 2 until skill 1 have had cooldown. and wtf is with the lack of pickup shortcut? (you can use spacebar, unless you have some other mob targeted... which you then will attack)

You have to RIGHTCLICK the skill on the shortcut bar to use it... click = move skill!!! And I couldnt find hotkeys to switch bars - u have to use the mouse. And there is like "map wide" shout...
Its enough to drive you nuts.

And the grind... it is if possible even more mind numbing than L2. There is little or no economy at the lower levels of the game. You cannot setup a buy or sell shop. No macro's. KS'ing... most damage gets the loot - but you won't be levelling those skills... and since you are levelling with the same faction - you can't even punish him - no hitting of friendlies allowed.

And although it looks pretty... there is no content - even worse than L2.

And don't get me started on the lag issues... omg...

IMO - L2 > RFO. Not even going to bother with the US/UK beta of RFO unless I hear of significant improvements.

This is true and not true. If you power level in parties you end up an underskilled gimp. Powerleveling solo on mobs within 5 - 8 levels of you and you will be fine.

This is only true if skill 1 and skill 2 are in the same level tier. It's designed that way to keep some balance in PvP, otherwise people would spam FP pots and do nothing but specials all day. For casters it is a lil different. You have 5 types of magic per skill tier. You can cast a different type of magic before cool down but not the same type.

If you have another mob targeted you can use the x key for pickup. Amazes me how people comment on things a game lacks after they skip the beginner tutorial and help files.

You have to RIGHTCLICK the skill on the shortcut bar to use it... click = move skill!!! And I couldnt find hotkeys to switch bars - u have to use the mouse. And there is like "map wide" shout...
Its enough to drive you nuts.

Again you should have went through the beginner tutorial or help files. Shortcut bars work the same as in L2, numbers on the shortcut bar reference numbers on the F-Key. Alternating between shortcut bars can be done in two ways. ALT + #, # being the shortcut bar number you want to switch to, or you can cycle through your active shortcut bars using the tab key.

Yes the map wide shout is annoying just like the shout in Giran area. Luckily they are adding auction houses to stop all of that crap.

The grind is not near as bad as L2 and the level cap is 25 levels lower than L2. There is no need for buy and sell shops, on P2P release auction houses will be available to buy and sell items. In other words, no crowded streets and flooded map chat. KSing is a bannable offense, fraps or SS and send to support. Macro's, aren't really needed in RFO.

And although it looks pretty... there is no content - even worse than L2.

There is more content and maps at higher levels that you can't even get to until you are around lvl 30.

And don't get me started on the lag issues... omg...

DUH, Server is located on the otherside of the globe and they had limited bandwidth to non domestic players. Of course you are going to get lag.

IMO - L2 > RFO. Not even going to bother with the US/UK beta of RFO unless I hear of significant improvements.
L2 is better for carebears who don't like PvP. RFO you will constantly be PvPing after you leave noobville.

Why did you say the lvl cap is 25 when you said there is more content around lvl 30 ?
