I Found the fix for the unsupported ATI Radeon cards, i myself was using Radeon 9200. Wich isnt supported on BF2 so everytime i load the game it would crash when i would start it up
this is the fix:
First u need to make sure you have ATI Catalyst wich u can download here:
http://www.ati.com/
then after you installed it, you will have a small ATI Symbol in your taskbar
or however its called, right next to the clock.
You will have to rightclick it, then go to settings and then Displaysettings
Go to the tab named SMARTGART(tm)
and set the speed to 4x
now you will be able to play the game without any problems, unless your card sucks of course
im not 100% sure if this works for all radeon cards, but it worked for my Radeon 9200
