do virus scanners detect keyloggers? if so which ones do and which ones wouldn't? Thanks for help in advance

Most scanners detect popular ones. If someone made his own kelogger, no chance for you.

Two progs that might help. "Hijackthis" and "A2", they will catch the known malware, if it is a new or custom written logger your only hope is a good firewall that might catch the logger trying to pass your info. Good luck.

nod32 is a very good virus/malware scanner with a good heuristics search, means you have a good chance to even detect unknown viruses and keyloggers

its not freeware like hijackthis but u can use a full 30 day trail which should be enough time to fix your problem
