here is my friends problem, not mine

I have the game properly installed with no errors on my system with a Legit copy of Windows Vista, the problem is after installing a server patch after following directions it seems that when I load the L2.exe it doesn't load up, but when I go into my task manager to look at things L2.exe is running in the background taking up about 6k to 8k kb of space... Has anyone come across this problem that could help me out?
