For running multiple clients smoothly the biggest issue is memory.

From what I've seen, each L2 client uses around 300-500 megs of memory, so I'd say that the rule of the thumb is that you need 512megs of RAM / client to run smoothly. For leveling that is.
Naturally for sieges, mass pvp, raids etc. the memory usage goes up

maybe in some cases RAM is the most important if you have very little to begin with, but processor speed must be the most important overall, i had 1 gig of ram, upgraded to 2, and it makes very little difference, i can still barely 3 box on my 3700 AMD. you can upgrade the ram on any computer to 2 or 4 gigs, but not every computer is a dual quad core, quad core, dual duo core, or duo core

I think you can run 3 clients very smoothly and with big windows.... Probably 5 if you scale down size and details...

Well I had 3 clients running without any problems on my XP3000+ and 1.5gig ram. In fact I could run 4 clients decently.
With the Dual Core and 2 gigs of ram I can run 4 clients smoothly, maybe 5 but I never really tried with more than 4.
But yeah Dual core helps but I'd still say that the memory is the key thing.

Windows focuses most of the CPU and GPU resources on whatever client is the active one. Which is ok because it doesn't matter if the clients in the background have a delay. Presuming that you aren't using walker that is.
Because the CPU resources get focused on the active client, even a weaker CPU can be used to run multiple clients.
With memory however, it doesn't work that way. Every client uses roughly the same amount of memory, whether it's in the background or not. And once you run out of RAM your PC begins to swap and that's when the lagging begins.

I have a PC with XP 2200+, Ti4200 and 512 ram at my parents place. I can run one client with low details decently, two clients and it lags like mad. But before I upgraded my main PC to use DDR2, I used to take two ram sticks from my pc to my parents place whenever I went there, bringing the total RAM to 1.5gig and with that I could run 3 clients without serious lag issues.

u would be abel to do 6+ but every time u move ingame it will be a lag fest to remember cause each cilent use xxx of mb. And when u run around u fill those mb more and more.

tops ived done is 6 box on my e6600 oced at 3.9 ghz with 4gb d9 micron ram. I used around 60 % of my ram.

GameGuard starts to act up at 7+ clients. It starts to randomly crash the 7th+ client. But I've done 7 accounts with only two gig of RAM.

e6600 OCed @ 3.9ghz....that's insane man....what kind of cooling system do you have....it sounds way too much that an e6600 can handdle when you instensive game like L2....mine e6600 OCed @3.6...with air cooling...temp w/ full load + nice weather (around 70 degree F) = 62-65...I doubt if i can ever OCed higher even with liquid cooling and having my system running stable
-currently e6600 OCed @3.6ghz, 8800 GTX OCed @ 600/2040, ram PC 8500 OCed @ 1150...running 3-4 client full detail without lag....im pretty satisfied.
