american people got owned (http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/59FFBBB6-E0BE-41D6-8443-76615ED53349.htm)

I like the penalty:

The 220.000-Dollar-Playlist

6544 Dollar each song and not even 1 Dollar when you buy at itunes.
Really, that makes sense
Is there something wrong with your legal system ;-)

You know what tickles me about Euro-leetists more than anything else? The fact that you actually spend a fairly large amount of time thinking about my country and culture. You go out of your way to nit-pick little details of our legal system, social structure, etc... I dare say you spend a greater deal of time thinking about us than thinking about issues in your own region, though I'm sure you believe you live in Utopia. You see, the reality of this entire situation we find ourselves in with each other right now is that while you obsess over my home and way of life, I don't give 2 shits about you. I don't care what the German government is doing, the horrible music that comes out of it. I don't think much about the mistakes of your past, nor do I care who you're going to vote for in your elections. That said, you still regularly find articles or any other dirt you can to try to justify your anti-American way of thought, but let's be real here. All you're really doing is magnifying your own ignorance and intollerance. Sure, my country may be guilty of a lot, but I'm very thankful I'm not some miserable sack of shit obsessing over another culture because mine's apparently uninterresting and inadequate.

What's so backwards about that? She shared music illegaly, got caught and now she's paying the price because she told the record companies to fuck off after they offered to let her off with a couple thousand dollar debt. The sentence makes sense to me in that they're sending out a message that even some ugly-redneck-idiot-woman can be fucked up over illegal filesharing and so can you.

Personally I htink it's just going to make people boycott buying major record label albums eventually... but that's just how I think it might go down.

Personally I htink it's just going to make people boycott buying major record label albums eventually... but that's just how I think it might go down.

That's the whole point, the longtail theory. Since the raising of internet, people can access way easier to non mainstream music, so they spend way less money on majors craps.

Majors can blame illegal downloads for their monetary loss, but they fail to realize that they're selling the same kind of bullshits for decades. And they failed to realize that little labels are using legals downloads for years now, a thing that major took years to do because they were worryied about losing profits.

Now in Switzerland, thanks to those fuckers lobby, we're paying a tax for every gigabytes we buy, be it in an iPod, or a harddrive, or a writtable DVD.

So thanks to them, I'm paying a debt because of their monetaries losts. That's fascism, I don't listen to their crap, I don't download their shitty music either, and when I'm turning my TV on and fall right on MTV, I'm on the verge of throwing it out of the window. So why the fuck am I paying for this ? And worst sad thing, is that I'm making music.

So when I buy a new HDD to store my samples or virtual instruments, I'm giving money to majors.

If I burn my music on CD to sell them to friends, I'm giving money to majors.

I hope one day this whole industry is gotta collapse, because they are already commiting a worldwide cultural genocide (i.e: wiggers, emos). And now they are getting money from people who makes music differents from their lowless shit form of music, people who make music for the sake of making music or art, not for making the next big hiphop/emo/metal/insertcurrenttrend hit who will sell billions of albums to 13 y/o girls and 16 y/o boys.

Did you really think they werent going to win? Did you think the fine was only going to be $24? I guess in your country if this was to happen they are ok with spending thousands in legal fee's to get their $24 only to have the next person go to court with them to spend thousands of dollars more to get the $17 from that person. Oh and then the great part of the person who they got $24 from just went and d/l another 20 songs. I would be willing to bet after paying $200k they probably wont go and d/l more songs.

As far as me, when I like a band or a song, I go buy the CD. It's my way of showing respect to the artist and also a vain part of my nature that likes to the the display case and all. Sure, the record companies make a stupid profit from someone else's hard work, but when you download music, rather than buy it from the people that worked hard to write it, you're just shitting on them too.

Of course the penalty is higher than the price of the original product. That's why it's called a penalty. Or are you telling me that if you lets say ride the bus without paying the fare and get caught the penalty for it will be the price of the original ticket? Dunno how they do it in Germany, but at least in Finland you end up paying about 25 times the price of the ticket.

And the woman in question wasn't just downloading music, she was sharing them. The fact that you're sharing music makes it trickier because up to thousands of people can end up downloading that song from you.

I think that going after individuals who are downloading music for their personal use is just dumb. But going after people who run f.e. Torrent trackers or FTP servers with thousands of songs is understandable.

I fully agree that if you like the artist buy the CD, or Itunes version. The sad thing is it costs a whole 1 American dollar to make a CD for most labels. That INCLUDES band pay, shipping, promotions, packaging, etc... it includes everything. The companies then sell it to most stores at 10-12 bucks a pop, leaving the stores with shit all for profit. The company makes all the money, the artist gets fucked. Personally I would rather see all the big money making companies go belly up and the artists just go direct to itunes and whatnot.

Claymore, its not that other countries bash every horrible thing about america (well I suppose some do), its that america tries to strong arm other countries into changing their laws to match America's own. Take the MPAA for example, the somehow got the American government to "bully" canada into changing its legal system based around camcorders in Theatres. Yes I know it was stupid to have a law allowing camcorders in theatres in the first place, but it was there and Canada got told what to do, and like a good little bitch the government listened.

Its companies like the MPAA and the RIAA that make people want to do this shit, well that and people are cheap as fuck. Personally I am pretty happy I never went and paid the 8 bucks to see spider-man 3 in the theatre, that would have been a complete waste of 8 bucks, unfortunatly the 2+ hours of my life wasted I can't get back. Additionally they lie throught their fucking teeth. According to the MPAA, 50%-75% of the cam copies of movies come from Canada, 50%-60% come from russia, and 25%-40% come from china....they are pretty bad at math. Its just a bunch of greedy faggot companies getting owned hardcore by greedy consumers, the people really getting fucked are the artists.

That's sort of like saying that one instance of a crime is ok and another is wrong. They're both wrong IMO, and should both be punished. For example, you have two people. One has murdered 50 people and the other has murdered one person. Should the person who has murdered one person be let off because it's not as bad as the other who killed 50?

I see what you're saying but I don't agree at all.

Well I'd say that murder is hardly comparable.
You get a bigger sentencing for dealing drugs than you do for buying/using them. And with downloading MP3s, well basically everybody does it. So to go after all the private users dl:ing MP3s would be a legal impossibility so the prosecution would be totally random. Which would mean that those who are randomly picked to be sued would most likely end up paying insane fines instead of those fines being spread across all the ppl downloading mp3s

His country must be pretty "golden" if you spend the vast majority of your time on l2blah trying to put it down. He doesnt give a shit about your country, why do you care about his?

Because you are what you do. If you dont care a shit for others, you are exactly this, someone who cares a shit for others. If you are pleased being such a person, I am fine with that, but this isnt my goal.
And concerning "vast majority of your time", re-check the number of my posts and then compare it to yours and think again.

@ Jonne: It's still illegal and I don't think the sentence was too harsh. They made it that steep to send out a message:

"Even if you're an average schmuck, you can still get fucked up for downloading music illegally. No one is exempt."
