I think changing the constitution to allow himself an unlimited number of terms would have been more honorable.

He needs to go all Hugo Chavez and slowly change the constitution to make him the lifelong ruler of Russia.

He doesn't need to change anything. As long as he's popular he can keep switching between being the president and the prime minister. The Russian constitution has a term limit of two consequtive terms as president. After the two terms you can sit one term out and be the prime minister, then run for president again and be the president for the next two terms
